Many successful color consultants/designers have been artists, not in the sense of selling art, but using it to express and experiment with color. Faber Birren, the father of our profession, studied art at the Chicago University and was a painter, Dr. Heinrich Frieling, founder of the IACC, was an artist, Frank Mahnke was trained in art, and of course Edda Mally started as an artist. So many more within the IACC have also realized that actually working with color through art expression has made a great difference in becoming a professional color consultant/ designer of excellence.

Dates:
Commences 9 June (day of arrival) and end 19 June (date of departure).
The absolute registration deadline is 31 March 2008.

For detailed information and fees, please contact Prof. E. Mally, E-mail: eddamally [@] hotmail.com

What do you need? Help navigating the thousands of paint chips out there. Paint paralysis comes in many forms. Maybe you’re afraid of choosing the wrong shade.
Publicity is a great way to get the word out about the importance of what this organization is all about, and the value of educated color design; so help spread the word- it benefits all of us!

This book, along with his book originally published in 1996, is a must-have on your bookshelves. Between himself and his colleagues Dr. Rodeck and Prof. Meerwein, about 100 years of experience in color, design, psychology etc. are represented. To give you a sneak peak, here’s a quote from the conclusion of the book;

“A person’s appreciation of aesthetics and quality continues to develop well into age. Consequently, good color design requires sensitive insight, sound knowledge of color’s meaning and effect, professional competence in the use of color in architecture and interior design, plus a holistic conceptual approach, awareness, and creative courage.

It also requires a distinct sense of elegance, culture, design, and material.

In addition to architecture, interior design, materials and light, good color design is an essential factor in the communication between human beings and architectural space, in all areas of life. It is a cultural and social responsibility.”

-Meerwein, Rodeck, Mahnke, “Color - Communication in Architectural Space”

Here’s a link to buy it through various online sources. For those of you who have this book already, what did you think of it? What other color-related books do you consider essentials in your collection?

I’m very excited to announce something new from the International Association of Color Consultants/Designers: our very own blog.

This new addition to our website will make it easy for IACC-NA members to communicate with all of you. Here you will find a wide range of information related to all aspects of color and design from our members: informative articles, links to inspiring websites, information about workshops and classes of note, upcoming conferences, lectures, new books written by color and design luminaries, photos and examples of good color design by members, the latest research, and much more. If it’s related to color, you’ll probably find it here! We encourage all IACC-NA members to contribute posts, so please contact the website committee to submit articles. Be sure to check back often for new entries.
Be prepared to be well informed!

Cheers,
Rebecca Bushner
President, IACC-NA
